Batman appears in so many titles that picking one film can start to feel like homework. We chose Batman (1989), Batman Begins (2005) and The Batman (2022) as three separate starting points. DC’s official film pages and continuity guide were checked on October 9, 2026. This is research-based viewing advice, not a personal screening review or a ranking of the actors.
Batman (1989): start with the confrontation
Tim Burton directs Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. DC’s synopsis sets up the Joker’s plans for Gotham and Vicki Vale, with Batman opposing him. The familiar adversaries provide a clear reason to begin here.
I would pick it when the confrontation itself is the attraction. The limitation is expecting an older film to offer exactly the presentation of a recent production. You need not eliminate it for its age, or treat its classic status as an instruction to watch it first. Ask whether this particular starting point interests you. Searching with the year and director avoids confusing its simple title with another Batman film.
Batman Begins: start with the decision
Christopher Nolan’s 2005 film stars Christian Bale and explores Bruce Wayne’s emergence as Batman. DC describes his journey after his parents’ deaths and return to Gotham. It is the direct candidate when your question is why this person becomes the masked character.
Its appeal is that beginning, with a clear continuation if you want one. DC identifies it as the opening film of Nolan’s trilogy. The drawback for a single evening is that an origin may be less appealing than an immediate confrontation or investigation. You do not need to commit to three films before watching one. Decide afterwards whether you want to stay with the same interpretation.
The Batman: start with an investigation
Matt Reeves directs Robert Pattinson in the 2022 film. DC’s official description foregrounds a vigilante detective, and its interview with Reeves explains his wish to put investigation at the center. We have kept the answer to that investigation out of this guide.
I would start here when following clues sounds more attractive than another origin. That recommendation may be a mismatch if fast action is your only interest. It is not an invented claim that we timed or personally found the film slow. Read the premise and decide whether detective work is what you want tonight. This is not the next chapter of Batman Begins merely because the protagonist has the same name.
Keep the continuities separate
DC’s guide distinguishes the Burton and Schumacher films, Nolan’s trilogy and Reeves’ separate world. Our three candidates are different entrances, not a single character aging through one release-order timeline. Knowing the group of the film you selected is enough to avoid that confusion.
For a later viewing, stay with an interpretation you enjoyed or choose another starting point. There is no need to establish which actor is the correct Batman first. We have not calculated box-office or audience-score rankings. A large catalog can remain an invitation rather than a barrier when you reduce the first decision to a title, a year and the question you want the story to answer.
Make the choice together
With another viewer, ask whether the Joker confrontation, the origin or a detective case sounds best. These are all candidates for the same movie night. If two appeal equally, access to the right edition can help decide. We did not establish current streaming availability across Korea and the United States.
Before paying, check the title and year, subtitles and access period. A rental and a subscription inclusion are different offers. The photograph shows Pattinson at Cannes in 2014, not in costume or in a scene from The Batman. The table collects the confirmed basics and our editorial selection questions. Whichever entrance you choose, the other interpretations remain available for a future evening.
