A tablet can look inexpensive for note-taking until the pen, keyboard, case and apps enter the bill. We compare the 11-inch iPad A16, 11-inch Galaxy Tab S11 and Xiaomi Pad 7. These are standard, premium and value-oriented candidates rather than a disguised equal-price performance contest.
iPad A16: choose the app and Pencil together
The useful reason to buy an iPad is that an iPadOS application suits the work you want to do. For lecture notes and annotated PDFs, investigate export formats, synchronization and paid features. Familiarity with the brand does not establish that a phone app and its tablet version do everything identically.
Pencil compatibility needs particular care. Apple lists Apple Pencil USB-C and the first-generation Pencil for this model, with an adapter condition for the latter. Do not add Pencil Pro or a second-generation Pencil to the order on the assumption that they fit. Also compare pen features separately: writing on the display does not mean every supported pen provides the same pressure-sensing capabilities.
Galaxy Tab S11: account for the included pen
The Tab S11 provides an 11-inch AMOLED display and an included S Pen configuration to investigate. It is a candidate for someone extending a Galaxy routine into notes and multitasking. Compare that inclusion with the extra pen cost on another device, while checking the official box contents for the actual sales region.
Samsung also describes DeX and microSD support. A memory card does not expand every kind of app or file workflow in the same way, so relate it to what you store. DeX does not turn the tablet into a Windows computer capable of running every desktop program. Try the actual applications and documents you need rather than inferring compatibility from a mode name.
Xiaomi Pad 7: does the saving survive the extras?
Xiaomi lists Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, an 11.2-inch 3:2 display and up to 144Hz. The screen shape is worth considering for documents and web pages. A maximum refresh figure is not a promise that every app runs at that rate, nor does it establish the behavior of every handwriting application.
For notes, identify the exact compatible pen and whether it is separately purchased. Do not assume an existing stylus will work. Distinguish local distribution from an imported listing as well. Add the pen, warranty arrangements and return costs before deciding how much of the lower body price remains a saving.
Test notes through to export
A few strokes in a store are only the beginning. Check the language and document types you use, palm contact, PDF annotation, zooming, page changes and export. At the end of a semester, being able to move the notes out of an application can matter as much as how attractive they looked inside it.
Add a year's subscription if the app requires one. Try lecture video and notes together using the actual app combination. A split-screen feature does not establish that both work comfortably. If this is meant to replace a laptop, verify submission formats, external storage and any essential web authentication too.
Video and handwriting have different accessory bills
For mostly video, buying every pen and keyboard immediately may add little value. Verify playback quality in the streaming services you use. A high-resolution panel does not guarantee that each service streams at that resolution. Think about the brightness and speakers you will use at home, rather than only the impression under shop lighting.
For study, consider the case angle, desk footprint and charging routine. A lightweight tablet with a heavy keyboard case becomes a different carry package. We have not measured handwriting latency with a common test setup, so the comparison uses app suitability, compatible pens and total cost instead of an invented response-time ranking.

Where we would start
Start with the A16 if a specific iPadOS application is the reason to buy, with the S11 if its Android workflow and included pen fit, and with the Pad 7 if the full setup preserves an important saving. For note-taking, the useful price is what gets you through the first semester—not just the tablet on the shelf.
