The machine is a one-off decision; the next capsule order keeps returning. We use Nespresso Original’s Essenza Mini, illy’s Y3.3 iperEspresso and Dolce Gusto’s Genio S Plus as reference machines. These are separate systems, not interchangeable capsules. In particular, treating Nespresso Original and Vertuo as the same purchase can cause trouble before the first cup.
Nespresso Original: choose the capsule system carefully
Original is worth investigating if your routine starts with a small coffee extraction. With a simple machine such as the Essenza Mini, you can approach espresso or lungo directly and add water for a longer drink. If you usually want a large, mild mug, consider whether that extra step fits the morning routine.
The Nespresso name does not make all capsules compatible. Vertuo uses a different system and its capsules do not fit an Original machine. Read compatibility labels on third-party capsules just as carefully. Frequent latte drinkers should include milk preparation equipment, ingredients and washing-up in the purchase calculation.
illy: a narrower routine can be a benefit
The Y3.3 uses iperEspresso capsules. Neither an illy logo nor a coffee-like shape means every other illy capsule or E.S.E. pod will fit. Look for the actual system name on the box before ordering. That small check is more useful than discovering a cupboard full of the wrong format.
This is a candidate for someone who prefers repeating a chosen coffee to continually exploring other capsule brands. That does not establish that its taste is universally better. We have not conducted a controlled tasting of these three systems. Check both your preference and the dependable availability of the capsules you expect to buy.
Dolce Gusto: consider the milk-drink routine
The Genio S Plus offers settings to investigate for drink size and temperature. The wider menu includes both black coffee and milk-containing drinks, which may appeal to a household whose members want different things. A capsule milk drink, however, is a different preparation and ingredient choice from adding fresh milk yourself.
Dolce Gusto's FAQ explains that some milk coffees use a coffee capsule plus a milk capsule for one drink. A box's capsule count therefore is not always its serving count. Read the instructions and ingredient labels for the exact menu, including milk and sugar information, before calculating its value.
Calculate the recurring cup cost
Divide the delivered box price by the drinks it actually produces. For a purely illustrative example, a 900-won cup makes 20 cups cost 18,000 won. This is arithmetic, not a checked current price for any of the brands. A two-capsule drink needs the price of the complete pair, not just one capsule, in the comparison.
A starter bundle or machine promotion lowers the initial bill. It does not establish what you will spend afterward. Write down regular capsule prices, shipping rules and your likely drinking frequency. A discounted bulk box left undrunk is not economical. A smaller first order can be a better way to establish which drink deserves a repeated purchase.
Convenient still means some cleaning
Used capsules, drip trays and water tanks need attention. Follow the machine-specific descaling and cleaning instructions rather than assuming a water flush completes every maintenance job. In a small kitchen, check the direction in which the tank lifts out and where used capsules will be handled.
A separate milk accessory adds washing-up. Capsule milk drinks can reduce that step while adding capsule cost and waste. Picture the whole process—making, drinking and tidying—rather than comparing only the footprint on the counter. A machine that matches both your coffee preference and your tolerance for chores is more likely to stay in use.

Where we would start
Start with Original if choosing coffee capsules is part of the appeal, with the Y3.3 if you want to repeat an iperEspresso routine, and with Dolce Gusto if varied capsule drinks suit the household. The more revealing price is next month’s cup cost, not the discount attached to the first machine.
